Claire Barrow is a London-based interdisciplinary visual artist (b. Stockton-on-Tees). Her work focuses primarily on the exploration of experiences – from the familiar to the ambiguous to the phantasmagoric. She uses a variety of formats (spray paint, acrylic, collage, clay, drawing and dance) to create parallel realms, characters and narratives that reflect experiences from her own life and worlds beyond. 

 
Barrow’s process is open-minded at every stage, driven by intuition and invocation. This approach allows her to conceal deeper meanings beneath an apparent aesthetic impulsiveness. In Barrow’s more recent projects, a sense of claustrophobia – a comment on both internet culture and the nature of consciousness in the modern world– is a quiet constant. Visions are seen in semi-random markings, time loosens and becomes floppy, proportions slide out of scale. Her dream states often bridge placid utopian fantasy and dystopian chaos. Immersed in both, the viewer swims in social and autobiographical narratives, reflecting and relating projecting their own experiences onto every extra terrestrial and iridescent surface. 
 

First attracting notice as a fashion designer, Barrow’s multifaceted nature moved naturally towards making art as her sole practice. While fascinated by the power of fashion – she continues to produce occasional collections of clothing on her own terms – her work creeps further towards the experimental and indefinable.
